Report: Rockfeedback @ iTunes Festival Night 1 - Jamie T & Slow Club

4/5

By Holly Eells

This year, Rockfeedback is delighted to be the official blog partner for the rather exciting iTunes Festival, taking place at London's Roundhouse every night in July. Over the course of the festival, we'll not be missing a night, delivering morning-after reports on everyone from Oasis and Bloc Party to Franz Ferdinand and Kasabian playing intimate sets to fans lucky enough to have won tickets to the shows. Within days, we'll also be bringing you exclusive live and interview footage with a selection of them too. Jamie T and Slow Club kick us off.

Slow Club

[SLOW CLUB]

iTunes Festival kicked off its series of gigs last night with the almighty lyricist Jamie T and breaking-through twosome Slow Club. Despite the excruciating heat, there was a vast turn out - unsurprising really, as these free shows are a treat for some very lucky competition winners indeed.

As a few drifters tried to decide whether their love of Slow Club was countered too strongly by the heat, I stayed, and liked them immensely. Smart venues and big crowds like this can put a lot of pressure on a two piece, the opening act of this year's festival, but hands down, they pulled it off. Bringing in a substantial crowd, as their set progressed their confidence began to shine, producing a clamorous collective sound despite being just the two of them. Sure, double acts are becoming oddly commonplace these days, but the duo are let off the hook due to the sheer quality of their charming country-folk.

Jamie T

[JAMIE T]

The uncontested star of the night however was good old Jamie T. Throughout his headline set, his energy got greater and greater, itself bouncing off the audience's noticeable collective high in a way that was quite immense. His quick witted lyrics were repeated in surprisingly in-key fashion back and forth by his hardcore fans, a group eating out of the palm of his hand. Newer, catchy little numbers like 'Sticks and Stones' went down a treat alongside modern day classics like 'If You Got The Money', whipping the throng in to a frenzy, leading Mr T. (Mr T.!) in to a fearless stage dive, surfing his way across the mixed mass of people - a highlight of the night for sure.

Despite the heat being nigh on unbearable, nobody felt the need to take themselves away for a breather - Jamie was captivating. His grand finale, naturally, was all time favourite 'Sheila'. What else?
